The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has discovered new settlements in Zamfara, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Alhaji Jibril Zarewa, said.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Gusau that the commission had begun arrangements “to capture the people in the settlements in its data base.”

Zarewa, who did not mention the number of the settlements, noted that “it is too early to conclude on the number of newly discovered settlements in the state.’’

He however said INEC had embarked on a review of all existing settlements in the state ahead of the 2015 general elections.

He added that “the review is part of the commission’s mandate. The commission will also partner with the National Boundary Commission and Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation to ensure full coverage,” he said.

“We want to ensure that all communities and settlements are captured in the commission’s data base to ensure that no one is left out during the elections.’’

Zarewa said all issues relating to the new settlements and voter registration would be completed before the 2015 polls.

He said the commission had established various ways of detecting multiple registrations and warned that anyone found to have registered more than once would lose the opportunity to vote as his or her name would be eliminated from the register completely.(NAN)
