The National Conference on Thursday in Abuja, recommended the creation of an additional 18 states to meet the aspiration of Nigerians.
The conference made the recommendation while adopting the Report of its Committee on Political Restructuring and Forms of Government.
The suggested states are Apa state from the present Niger state, Kanji state from the present Kebbi state, Katagum state from Bauchi state and Savannah state from the present Borno state.
Others are Amana state from the present Adamawa state, Gari State from the present Kano state, Gorara State from the present Kaduna State and Etiti state from the present South East Zone.
Others include Abba state from the present Abia state, Adada state from Enugu state, Njaba-Anim State from the present Anambra and Imo state, Anioma State from the present Delta state.
Others are Ogoja State from the present Cross River State, Ijebu State from the present Ogun State, New Oyo state from the present Oyo state.
It adopted that an additional state should be created for the South-East zone for equity and justice among the zones that make up the country.
The conference further recommended that henceforth state creation should be on the basis of parity between the geo-political zones. It adopted a recommendation that for any new state to be created, such a new state must have a minimum population of one million persons.
It added that the aspiration of new states must be backed by potential viability in terms of economic potential, human natural and material resources.
It was equally resolved that the right to self-determination by the states as federating units should be extended to ethnic nationalities within the states if they so desired.
It approved that each state of the federation should have its own constitution which would be subservient to the federal constitution.
The conference voted in favour of modified presidential government that combines the attributes of parliamentary and presidential systems. It called for the adoption of fiscal federalism as a way of improving the well being of many Nigerians.
