The Niger Delta Youth Federation on Wednesday pledged to work closely with youth groups in the Northern region to promote peace and national unity.

The National President of the group, Mr Hart Maxwell, told newsmen in Kaduna that youths in the Niger Delta had since realized the need to promote issues that would enhance national cohesion and development.

"We are willing and ready to partner other groups to make the country peaceful,’’ he said.

Maxwell advised youths to shun politicians who were fond of encouraging them to resort to violence, saying such politicians were anti-people.

According to him, the youth must focus on ways to engage themselves positively to be self-reliant and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

"We must shun all negative tendencies. It is the youths that suffer from the negative activities of politicians in Nigeria. If there is war today in Nigeria, our politicians will all fly abroad and leave the youths to destroy themselves.

"The Niger Delta region has decided to take the bull by the horn by rejecting all forms of restiveness. We are, therefore, calling on all our brothers from other parts of the country to say no to all politicians masterminding violence which the youths are used to perpetuate,'' he said.

He said the group would meet some Northern youths to address certain challenges and insecurity confronting both regions.

"The youths are the perpetrators of the insurgency in the North, the militancy in the South South, the kidnapping in the South East and all other forms of crimes and criminality,'' he said.

According to him, the group is saying no to these negative tendencies because of its belief in a peaceful, united and prosperous Nigeria, which cannot be achieved in an atmosphere of insecurity.

Maxwell believed that the current security challenges in the North had nothing to do with religion, but an attempt by "political gladiators to exercise their political strength''.

On his part, Pastor Yohanna Buru of the Peace Revival and Reconciliation Foundation of Nigeria, a Kaduna based NGO, commended the initiative of the Niger Delta youths.

Buru said that the development would lead to the country’s stability and progress.
