Mr Peter Idabor, Director General, National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), said Nigeria was now Coordinating Centre for the Implementation of the Regional Oil Spill Contingency Plan.

Idabor announced this on Wednesday when the Board and Management of the agency paid a courtesy visit to Lt. Gen. Kenneth Minimah, the Chief of Army Staff in Abuja.

According to him, with the new status, Nigeria will bring in its security expertise in the control of oil spill.

The director general said the challenge of oil spill was beyond the Niger Delta. Idabor noted that the pipelines that conveyed crude oil to various refineries in the country were vulnerable to vandalism.

The director general stressed that Nigeria Army was a core stakeholder in the implementation of the national action plan of the agency.

He called for sustained provision of security during field operations to ensure success in the study and assessment of oil spills.

"We are always vulnerable to attacks by communities during oil spills; therefore, we need the army for protection of our staff during assessment of such spills".

Idabor appealed to people to desist from vandalism, stressing that over 1000 chemicals could be spilled into the sea which posed serious threats to the ecosystem. He said the food value chain of the people was always affected whenever there was spillage.

In his response, Minimah expressed the readiness of the army to provide the requisite security when needed. Minimah said oil spills had obstructed the socio-economic life and culture of the people hence must be brought under control.
