On Thursday, some delegates at the ongoing National Conference urged older Nigerians that had served the country over the years to step aside for the youth to coordinate affairs of the country.

The delegates made the call in Abuja while discussing President Goodluck Jonathan’s March 17 conference inaugural speech.

Binta Garba, a delegate representing Adamawa State, said it was disheartening to watch the youth in Nigeria wasting away because "the old refused to step aside"

"We must salvage this country so that our children tomorrow can have hope. Some are in their last dispensation; some are in their afternoon just like I am but what will be the morning of our tomorrow’s children?. With due respect you have failed us.

"Fathers, grandfathers, take a bow and allow the future generation - the youth of this country - to take a step forward so that at the end of it all, you can only be an adviser, advising the younger generations to take the front burner. Names we’ve been hearing since the 1960s are the same names we are hearing in the 21st century", she said.

Garba also urged Nigerians to shun every act capable of plunging the country into further hardship. She said that religious and tribal sentiments should be set aside so that Nigeria would grow into the great nation that Nigerians were clamouring for.

Yinka Gbadebo, the President, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), expressed displeasure over the challenges confronting the youth in the country.

He said it was disheartening to note that the youth, particularly students, were not given "their pride of place as the future of the country"

"In building a truly great nation, I believe our utmost priority must be education. You people will always tell us that we are the leaders of tomorrow, yet up till this moment, nobody has discussed the issues that have direct bearings on the life of an average Nigerian student",he said.

He attributed the security situation in the country to the inability of the youth in the country to actualize their dreams.

He, therefore, urged the conference to address the myriad of problems facing the youth in order to create the environment that would enable all Nigerians to achieve their dreams.
