As part of activities marking the 15th anniversary of democratic rule in the country, Minister of Youth, Mr. Boni Haruna, had told a gathered audience at an event: “A Day with Young Leaders of Nigeria” at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, that President Goodluck Jonathan had granted amnesty to members of Boko Haram. He also said series of integration programmes had been lined up for members of the sect who would surrender their arms and embrace peace.

Ordinarily, this is a cherry piece of news for a number of reasons. One, it opens a new page in the government’s effort at ending insurgency in the country. Two, it offers a fresh vista for a flurry of activities at the highest levels of government in the states and Abuja; still geared towards restoration of peace in the country. Three, it presents this government as a listening one in the context of the demands for the payment of compensation to/ and unconditional release of members of the sect in federal government’s detention facilities across the country by Northern Elders Forum (NEF) as preconditions for peace in the region and cessation of hostilities in the region.

The same NEF had also expressed opposition to President Goodluck Jonathan’s acceptance of foreign assistance to rescue the 200+girls ‎abducted on April 14 at the Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS) Chibok, Borno State by the insurgents and instead, proposed to the federal government that it (NEF) acts as a go-between to negotiate the release of the girls!
