A total of 269 pharmaceutical facilities comprising 12 pharmacy stores and 222 patent and proprietary medicine vendors (PPMVs) shops have been sealed by the monitoring and enforcement team of the Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria (PCN).
The Council said the action against the shops was for operating without valid licence on one hand, or operating beyond the licensed scope on the other hand.
In the same vein, 11 other pharmaceutical facilities in the state were issued compliance directives by the PCN headquarters enforcement team with a view to enabling them perfect the identified loopholes in their operations.
Disclosing this to journalists in Ibadan shortly after concluding a week-long operation in Oyo State, the PCN Director in charge of Inspection and Monitoring, Mrs. Anthonia Aruya, lamented that the situation on ground “is that a good number of patent and proprietary medicine vendors (PPMVs) do not want to submit to regulation, neither do they appreciate the delicate nature of the critical services rendered by them that directly affects life.”
Aruya told newsmen that the PCN enforcement team had visited Ibadan metropolis, Iseyin, Oyo, Saki and Eruwa/Igboora during the week-long operation to strengthen the regulatory activities and to enlighten the public that services rendered in unregistered outlets could not be guaranteed and should thus be avoided. She further remarked that licenced pharmaceutical outlets were supposed to be renewed by March 31st of each year or be sealed.
She declared, “It is time we begin to do the right thing in Nigeria. And it will start with us. If we all do the right thing in our little corners, then on a national spread, I know that Nigeria will be moving forward. Enough is enough.”
