The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described as “comical” Wednesday’s swearing-in ceremony of Yahaya Bello as Kogi State governor, given that he did not participate in the overall election.

Mr. Bello was selected to enter the governorship seat following the death of the original candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Abubakar Audu, who died mere hours after the election results were announced.

In a statement, signed by Professor Adewale Oladipo the PDP National Secretary, the Party said that since Mr. Bello cannot claim the overall winning votes in the election, he is only a “shadow-chasing passerby” occupying the Governor’s house in Kogi State.

The statement went on to note that the supposed swearing-in ceremony has no basis, given the votes cast during the election.

“The people of Kogi are aware that the man being paraded by the APC is not the person they exercised confidence in at the election as he scored a paltry 6885 votes in the so-called supplementary election against the 204,877 votes polled by the PDP candidate, Idris Wada in the overall election,” the PDP’s statement read.

It added that being a law abiding party, the PDP is urging its members and the people of Kogi State to remain calm and not despair over what it called “this slap on democracy”. The courts, it said, will soon deliver justice with regards to the ture governor who possesses the mandate of the majority at the polls
