Italian mafia boss Domenico Rancadore, known as "The Professor" was denied bail for a second time yesterday at Westminster Magistrates’ Court because the judge feared he would disappear again if granted bail.
The 64-year old was arrested in London after two decades on the run. He is wanted in Italy to serve a seven year jail sentence for his actions in the Sicilian mafia and had been on Rome’s list of most dangerous criminals.
He had been living under the name Marc Skinner with his English wife and kids when he was nabbed a couple of weeks ago.
Donning a rugby shirt, he clutched a white bible as he listened to the judge and shook his head when his bail request was denied.
He had offered his wife's home as a surety for bail, along with $17,600.
Judge Quentin Purdy told him: "It seems to me clear that if you are released on bail there is a risk you will disappear. I can see no grounds to grant you bail and be satisfied that you will return."
He is due to appear before the same court on September 20.
He was convicted in his absence of Mafia links in Italy after he went on the run in 1993.
