Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo state on Thursday in Benin urged women to use their large number effectively to achieve political relevance in the state.

He gave the advice at a forum tagged "Edo Women Conference" organised by the International Federation of Women Lawyers in collaboration with the African Network for Environment and Economic Justice.

Oshiomhole said that statistics had shown that women are in majority in the country and, as such, should stop preaching to men to give them opportunity.

The governor urged women to make use of their large number to achieve their aims. He said women had also been known to be intelligent, patient, resourceful, dogged and capable of achieving set goals within limited periods.

He explained that material poverty does not translate to intellectual poverty, adding that history had shown that women do better in every aspects of the economy.

He urged them to realise that they were not in competition with their male folks, but must exude self-confidence as they were not inferior and powerless.

The governor also explained that the way out of poverty was to educate the girl child.

According to the governor, statistics show that only six per cent of children in the South-South zone are out of school. He, however, said that the target of the Edo Government was to ensure a zero level out-of- school for children in the state.

He said that the state would continue to put the Edo girl child first and continue to put in place policies that would favour them.

Oshiomhole promised that more pro-women programme would be put in place, adding that every year, the government would make available N10 million to the organisers for education programme.

Earlier, the spokesperson for the organisers, Dr Esohe Agahtise, called for promulgation of a law that would allow women to be the determinants of issues affecting them.

Aghatise said training of a woman means training the society, but noted that various issues were negatively impacting and militating against their development. She enumerated such issues to include training, family, education, professional life, political participation, marriage, motherhood as well as reproductive health issues.

She however said that the way forward was changing the cultural and social perspective of women’s role.
