The wrong #Nigerian flag was displayed at the World Cup opening ceremony in #Brazil on Thursday. Instead of the Nigerian flag, the organizers projected an image of #Niger’s flag onto the midfield globe during the ceremony.
A #Twitter user, Cameron Laws, pointed out the error.
The Nigerian flag has three vertical stripes, with a white in-between two green stripes. Nigeria’s crest is in the middle of the white stripe.
The Niger flag has three horizontal stripes. The top is orange, the middle is a white stripe and the last stripe is green. In the middle of the white stripe is an orange circle.
Nigeria and Niger are geographical neighbors and share a 450-mile border and are relatively friendly in terms of relations. Nigeria’s FIFA ranking is No. 44. Niger is ranked 112 and did not qualify for the World Cup.
This isn’t the first case of a flag mismatch during a sporting event. In the 2012 London Olympics, organizers showed the S.Korean flag instead of the N.Korean one during a women’s football match between North Korea and Colombia, and the players refused to turn up on the pitch.
