When it comes to who deserves to win the FIFA Ballon d'or award, it usually draws up contentious debates as regards to who merits it more.
Especially in recent years that Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have been competing against no one else but themselves, there will definitely be dissenting voices over the rightful winner.
The year in focus, sees German goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer go up against the duopoly of Messi and Ronaldo.
Many people have been canvassing for Neuer to win the award, with Argentine legend Diego Maradona championing the call for him, especially as he won the World Cup tournament.
Considering that the award is a reward for an individual effort over the cause of a year, Neuer still stands short behind Messi and Ronaldo.
Not because he is a goalkeeper and that shot-stoppers are hardly recognized for their efforts, no, a player like Ronaldo still edged it more than him in 2014.
Ronaldo of the three finalists deserves to win the award because of his individual achievements and brilliance in 2014.
Below are the reasons I have outlined backing Ronaldo to win the Ballon d'or award.
*He single-handedly won Real Madrid the La Decima:
Real Madrid have so much craved to win the La Decima title, it was something that they would have given an arm and a leg to get.
Ronaldo scored 13 goals in 12 matches that he played in the competition, and there is no denying that it was his goals that got Carlo Ancelotti's team that far to the final in Lisbon where they won the trophy.
Remember his decisive goals against Bayern Munich in the return leg of the semifinal tie that sealed the deal for Real, with Sergio Ramos scoring the other two goals in the 4-0 rout.
By the way his goals sailed in past Manuel Neuer.
*His goals in 2014:
The Portuguese finished last year with a remarkable 61 goals scored in 2014. A breakdown of the goals: he scored 56 for Real Madrid and six while playing for his country in 2014.
Last year, Ronaldo played 28 matches in the La Liga and he got 38 goals, averaging 1.36 goals per game.
In the Champions League, he scored and unprecedented 13 goals in a season averaging 1.09 goals per games played .
He outscored Messi in 2014, with the Barcelona star finishing the year three goals behind him with 58.
*Number of trophies won:
No doubt that trophies are a huge part of what equates to a successful campaign. Ronaldo last year won four trophies, more than his fellow contenders recorded.
He won the Champions League title, the European Super Cup, World Cup trophy and also the Copa Del Rey title.
The only other player who comes close to him is Neuer who won the World Cup, Bundesliga, and the German cup titles.
However, Ronaldo last year won numerous individual titles and it is hard not seeing him making it two successive Ballon d'or titles today.
