Sports Australian Open: Federer and Sharapova advance to the fourth round

Both Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova have booked their passage into the last 16 of the Australian Open after securing victories against their opponents.

Federer had no difficulty dispatching Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili in straight sets 6-2 6-2 6-3, to advance.

The Swiss who is ranked sixth in this Slam convincingly defeated Gabashvili to make the fourth round,as he continues his quest to add to his 17 grand slam titles.

Meanwhile Sharapova had no problems in her first set against France's Alize Cornet,effortlessly taking it 6-1. But she was made to do more hard work in the second which went to a tie break that ended 7-6 in the Russian's favour.

"She started playing better when I gave her some chances," said Sharapova.
"After my last match I'm just glad to be through and have another day to recover.

"I definitely need to step it up - every player will need to raise their game."

On Thursday,Sharapova revealed that she nearly passed out in her game against Karin Knapp which lasted for almost three-and-a-half hours owing to the searing heat.
