As international relations between Nigeria and USA worsen, people are becoming increasingly curious: just what does it take for USA to take interest in this terrorism raping the nation?
Few were surprised when we received word that Nigeria had discontinued its military training with the US. Many believe it will keep on deteriorating. An article on Leadership attempts to understand this peculiar international politics.
The article suggests that the 'little' help America has even shown Nigeria was under duress, as the world Giant isn't particularly happy for Nigeria's romance with China. Add to that the fact that Nigeria refused bluntly to allow the US Africa Command have a base in Nigeria. Add to that Nigeria's corruption levels and Jonathan's incompetence, White House isn't particularly undressed and ready to dive in bed with us.
Nigeria, on its part, is steadfastly insistent on keeping its affairs secret - and many fear that it is because our house isn't in order, and America's prying eyes will reveal ground-breaking secrets.
Whatever the case. The article writer goes on to say: "My source said the Obama White House expressed its willingness to help supply arms but gave a major condition: the Nigerian government must provide a report of what it is doing to address allegations of extrajudicial killings and other abuses in the war on Boko Haram."
Sounds reasonable enough? So why are we still experiencing animosity? The writer says: "The source explained that the Obama White House was not out for a stick to beat Jonathan on the head. All it needed was a report that the government was aware of the abuses and was taking steps to investigate and root them out. But Abuja, not used to anything that makes it break sweat, refused to lift a finger."
