Members of Nigeria's National assembly will have to wait till November this year before they get their salaries.

LEADERSHIP reports that the delay in payment of lawmakers' salaries is caused by the federal government's failure to release their statutory allocation as contained in the 2015 budget despite the fact that it has been reduced to reflect the existing economic realities in the country.

Statutory allocation to the National Assembly was cut from the N150 billion allocated in the 2014 budget to N120 billion in 2015.

A source, who is highly placed in the NASS bureaucracy corroborated the non-availability of salary till November story. He, however, told LEADERSHIP that the situation was not caused by non-availability of funds as being insinuated.

“Whoever told you that there is no money does not know what is actually happening. Yes, everybody – even lawmakers’ aides – have to wait till sometime in September or November for their salaries and this is largely due to the cumbersome process of documentation by lawmakers and their aides.

“You can’t expect money without proper documentation and, given the nature of the process, it is expected that by September or November it will be concluded and money can be properly accessed,” the source said.
