Nigeria - Vice-President-elect, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, on Friday explained how the Muhammadu Buhari administration would prosecute the anti-graft war in a bid to ensure zero tolerance for corruption, Punch reports.

According to Osinbajo, Nigerians must question sources of wealth of the rich. “We have always talked about zero tolerance for corruption but it is also important that people are made to understand that there will be consequence for corruption.

“What we have seen so far is that there is hardly any consequence and people simply get away with it and if you get away with it often, it sends a message to everyone that there is no problem, and we need to fix that whole thinking that there has to be a consequence for corrupt practices.

“People have to explain, for instance, if you are a public servant, that how come you have 50 houses. Somebody needs to ask you those questions and some of the reasons people get away with that is our criminal justice system.”

He said in view of the fact that the incoming administration would be taking the fight against corruption seriously, one of the reforms that would first be carried out is in the judicial system.

“Our criminal justice system needs to be fixed. The system is slow and it almost always ensures that people who have been charged with offenses would not be tried forever and after a while people forget that people are on trial.

“We have to fix that criminal justice system to ensure that criminal trials are speedy and that anyone who is guilty of an offense will be punished for that offense.

“The truth is that the system of protection, investigation and trial of people is wrong and the truth is that everybody gets away with criminality in Nigeria and I think there is a need for us to review the system such that it begins to work.”

He also mentioned that the Nigerian Police force would undergo some reforms in order to reduce corruption.

Punishing an offender or demanding that he who commit an offence should be punished has not done so for retaliation.
Sometimes some wrongs already cannot be can not be undone.

There goes the philosopher.

IMHO, corruption is entrenched in the roots of the nation and can't be tackled overnight. Even the bodies entrusted with tackling corruption is corrupt itself.

However, if those at the top aren't allowed to go escape with wrongdoings, then corruption in the grassroot will be massively reduced. It's can't be totally eradicated but haveing 1 corrupt official out of 1,000 is okay.

Buhari has warned his family members not be on the wrong side of the law.
I hope all Nigerians will do the same.
So let's put those days behind us: days in which corruption indicted persons will go and hired crowd to arose public sympathy to thier persons and to draw us away from thier crimes.

Let no one celebrated evildoers in whatever toga.

These are all great stories. We like to forget those that have been told in the past. I remember when the 'messiah' OBJ came out of jail to rule the country again, we were told he had banned all members of his family from Aso Rock - I love Nigeria :). I doesn't matter to me if his relatives are doing Skelewu in the corridors of Aso Rock, they should just get the job done and leave the spin and the spin doctors.

Buhari should not only do the job, but he should be seen as doing it. This is the reason why I believe that the signal he has sent is very important.

Let's be vigilant. We will hold him accountable to his words.
