We reported yesterday that the Tinubu, Lagos office of the Central Bank of Nigeria went up in flames.

The fire is said to have started on the third floor of the five storey building, and as at the time of this report, no one really knows what started it. Some unconfirmed reports, however, say the fire was as a result of faulty wiring.

The fire began at about 5:10pm as workers were moving documents and other sensitive items into the new building. People present say an alarm was raised by someone passing who saw smoke pouring out of the affected floor, causing panic.

The Lagos State Director of Fire Service, Mr. Rasaq Fadipe, said the service immediately responded to the fire alarm, rushing to the scene with 10,000 litres of water in two fire trucks by 5:45pm. They battled the fire even up until 6:50pm.

Fadipe, however, was unable to give the exact number of affected offices. He noted, however, that they would be able to give the numbers at the end of the operation.

A state officer collapsed due to suffocation by the fumes he inhaled. He was however rescued and taken to a nearby hospital.

Commenting on the incident, the Director, Corporate Communications Department, Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mr. Isaac Okorafor, said: “The CBN wishes to inform its stakeholders and the general public that a fire incident occurred at its Lagos Branch Office at about 5.30 this evening (Tuesday, March 25, 2014).
“The fire, which occurred on the first floor of the building, has been put out by a combined team of fire fighters from the CBN and other institutions. We wish to assure our numerous stakeholders that the records of the bank are intact, as the bank has an effective backup of all its records as part of our disaster recovery infrastructure.”
