The ASUU chapter in Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijebu-Ode, poured encomiums on the late Prof. Festus Iyayi at a candle-light procession organised in his honour on Wednesday morning.

Iyayi, 66, a former ASUU president, died on Nov. 12 in a motor accident involving the motorcade of Gov. Idris Wada of Kogi along the Lokoja-Abuja Expressway.

Dr Adebayo Akinsanya, the Chairman of the TASUED branch of ASUU, described the late scholar's death as painful, while speaking with newsmen at the venue of the procession.

“His death has really left a vacuum in the academic circle and we are going to miss him a lot,’’ he said, stressing that nothing done to honour the late professor would be too great.

“We organised this procession in honour of our late past president and bid him good night with the hope of meeting him in heaven,’’ he said.

The union leader also described Iyayi as a leader who fought throughout his lifetime to promote justice for all the people.

“Iyayi believed in the freedom of the people and we at TASUED will continue to fight until we are sure that his efforts were not in vain,’’ he said.

Commenting on the ongoing ASUU strike, Akinsanya said that the union would call off the strike once it was able to verify that the Federal Government had met its demands.

“We are fighting this cause for posterity and for the future of education in this country; we are confident that we will win,’’ he added.
