Some lawyers on Sunday in separate interviews commended delegates at the ongoing National Conference taking place in Abuja for endorsing the creation of state police in the country.

Mr Yinka Farounbi, the Chairman, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja Branch, said the creation of state police would help to address kidnapping, armed robbery, terrorism, and some other security challenges bedevilling the nation.

"Nigeria is too large to be overseen by a single police force which is receiving command from Abuja.

``There are some areas you need to know the terrain before you can even understand how to enforce security.

``For instance, if a policeman is posted from Kano State to Lagos State, he or she cannot understand the ways and manners of the people who live there and that will make his or her job difficult.’’

Another lawyer, Dr Muiz Banire, said the recommendation by the conference was in order.

"State police is the best way to go. It is the best thing that will happen to the security of this country.

``It will also create healthy rivalry among the state police commands because each state will want to equip its command with the best gadgets and work hard to provide security for the citizens.”

A human rights lawyer, Mr Bamidele Aturu, said the Nigerian Constitution should be amended by the National Assembly to give legal backing to states to create their own police commands.

He said ``we cannot run away from it because the truth of the matter is that we have 36 states which can only be effectively policed through the creation of state police.’’

Mr Onyekachi Ubani, the immediate past Chairman of the Ikeja branch of #NBA, also expressed satisfaction with the recommendation of the conference.
