Uruguay and Liverpool striker Luis Suarez is set for a knee surgery on Thursday and will be sweating for a full recovery ahead of the World Cup in Brazil.

Suarez was said to have twisted his knee during his country's night training session on Wednesday.

Uruguay Football Association is upbeat that the PFA and Football Writers' Player of the Year will win his fitness race in time for their first group D game against Costa Rica on June 14.

Speaking in an interview about the injury,Uruguayan FA official Roberto Pastoriza said that they are hopeful Suarez will be fit.

"According to the report I received a while ago, they are optimistic that he can play the World Cup.

"[Suarez felt] discomfort in his knee and thus he had to undergo tests. Everything happened very fast, some hours ago [on Wednesday night].

"The national team medical staff is dealing with this and [press secretary] Matias Faral will communicate the official report.

"The intention was that everything was kept confidential and that the report was announced today through the Uruguayan FA social network accounts.

"Everything was very surprising, Suarez trained with discomfort and it was decided to have an MRI scan.

"The information until a while ago was that they were deciding what will be done, but there are very high chances there will be a surgical intervention.

"I can't say anything else, the Uruguayan FA will officially announce it on Thursday morning.

#Suarez, has won 77 caps for his country, leading them to the semi-finals spot at the 2010 World Cup, and only Tuesday returned to link up with his national teammates to train for the 2014 World Cup.

Liverpool's medical team are also monitoring their star player's condition to monitor the extent of the injury.

The way the English press went about Suarez's injury this morning, one would think they had already World Cup. Maybe they are not quite confident they will make it out of a group that equally has former World Champs,Italy.

The English team is all hype and no action. I'll buy a drink for everyone if they get past the 2nd round.

It's strange enough that a non-English player swept the PFA and Football Writers' awards away right from under the noses of the English players in the premiership. What other way to put away a player envied than broadcast his injuries that it may be said that 'he is a mortal after all'!!!

Truth be told,if Suarez is out of the World Cup,it is definitely a big news.
