Mars Hill, a Washington megachurch, has recently announced that several of its branches will be closing. In addition, Mars Hill founder Mark Driscoll has also announced that he will be taking a leave of absence following negative media attention connected to his controversial views.
Driscoll has long been known for his homophobic and misogynistic views. However, he became a troubling topic for the church in July, when several offensive comments that Driscoll had posted on the internet years ago were revealed.
In one instance from 2001, Driscoll – writing under the name William Wallace II, said:
“Ultimately, God created you and it is his penis. You are simply borrowing it for a while. Knowing that His penis would need a home, God created a woman to be your wife and when you marry her and look down you will notice that your wife is shaped differently than you and makes a very nice home.”
“Therefore, if you are single you must remember that your penis is homeless and needs a home. But, though you may believe your hand is shaped like a home, it is not… And, if you look at a man it is quite obvious that what a homeless man does not need is another man without a home.”
