Some of the delegates to the National Conference on Friday described as unfortunate the death of Hamma Misau, a delegate representing retired police officers.

In separate interviews in Abuja, a cross-section of the delegates however said it was consoling that he died in active service.

Misau, 67 and from Bauchi state, died on Thursday at the National Hospital in Abuja of an undisclosed illness, with the conference’s Secretariat confirming his death on Friday.

Tanko Yakasai, a delegate, said that he was consoled that Misau died while working for the peace and unity of the country.

"It is a terrible situation. It is a bad news, but it is consoling that he died in active service for his nation. There is no better way of dying than dying while you are serving your people,’’ he said.

Yakasai however pointed out that Misau’s death would not affect the reconvening of the conference on Monday, March 31.

"According to Islamic rites, people are free to go about their businesses once a deceased was buried, except for close relatives who are expected to remain at home to receive condolences.I do not think his death will stall the reconvening on Monday", Yakasai said.

A former governor of Anambra, Virgy Etiaba, described Misau’s death as a tragic loss.

"It is a very painful death, because the man devoted his time to serve the nation but passed away without knowing the outcome of the conference,” she said.

Etiaba prayed God to console the family and encourage the living to live right as death was inevitable.

Prof. Roseline Onah, a delegate representing Enugu State, said that Misau’s death was a loss to his family, the conference and the nation at large.

"Having been selected as a candidate, some amount of trust must have been bestowed on him by the group which selected him because they know that he has a lot to offer.Definitely, it is regretful. But there is nothing anyone can do about it,’’ she said.
