The Nigerian senate on Thursday raised alarm that plane crashes are imminent in Nigeria due to the current economic situations in the country.

The senators cried after Sen., Dino Melaye presented a motion tagged “Disturbing Development in the Nigerian Aviation Industry.

Contributing, Minority Leader, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, said plane crashes are imminent because airlines can no longer access foreign exchange to service their aircrafts.

Some operators may resort to cutting corners as a result of their inability to access foreign exchange, thereby endangering the lives of air travelers, he said, adding that many airlines are already bankrupt “and dead." Other operators have either withdrawn or relocated to neighbouring countries, he said.

“These problems are caused by policies of government. Monetary policies of government have not allowed the airlines to operate," he stressed.

Other senators, including Deputy President Ike Ekweremadu, echoed his concerns.

After the debate, the senate resolved to assist the Federal Government in its planned intervention in the current challenges in aviation sector with a view to saving the travellers.
