The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Zone B, in a statement issued in Akure by the Zonal Vice-President, Mr Dele Atunbi, has called for the declaration of a state of emergency in the education sector to combat illiteracy among Nigerian children.
The statement expressed concern over the population of illiterate children in the country and stressed the need for compulsory school enrolment as well as free primary education for every Nigerian child.
According to the statement, the nation is likely to be in want of human resources in future considering the fact that 10 million children are still illiterate at present.
It called on all the tiers of government to give premium to the education of the Nigerian child.
“Nigeria as the giant of Africa cannot afford to be complacent with the development as the situation speaks volume about a bleak future,” the statement added.
It also called for increased budgetary allocation to the sector coupled with deliberate policies that would evolve an atmosphere conducive for teaching and learning.
“The Federal Government should also declare free education from primary to university level for every Nigerian,” it further stated and appealed to all major stakeholders in the education sector to be alive to their responsibilities to eradicate illiteracy among children."
