The World Health Organisation (WHO) has expressed satisfaction with the successes recorded in the ongoing polio immunisation exercise in border communities in Gombe State.

Dr Dauda Madugu, the Coordinator of the world apex health organisation in the state, expressed the satisfaction in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe on Monday.

Madugu said that the border immunisation camapaign, introduced early 2013, was aimed at preventing the importation of polio virus into the state.

He said that the state, which shares boundary with Borno and Yobe states, accounted for almost half of the confirmed cases of polio in the country.

"Considering the position of Gombe, which is located at the centre and surrounded by states with the polio cases, we need to take precautionary measures to ensure that our children are well protected," he said.

Madugu said that there was a daily influx of people to Gombe because of the insurgency in the neighbouring states.

The WHO coordinator said the exercise was a success as there was no case of resistance in the affected communities.

"From all indication, the level of awareness is increasing, we are very happy with the development," he said.

He appealed to the public to embrace the programme and support similar gestures to prevent further lost of lives and incapacitation.
