The era of political assassinations may have returned to Rivers state as Mr. Sotonye Georgewill, a councillor in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of the state has been murdered by unknown assailants.

PUNCH reported that Georgewill was stabbed to death at about 8.45pm on Sunday night. The incident took place on Accra Street in Port Harcourt.

According to eyewitness, Georgewill was hacked down as he approached a vehicle that waited for him in front of his residence. "Sotonye came out of his house after someone called him through his mobile phone and said he was waiting in front of the house. But two men came out of the car when he (Sotonye) got closer to it and one of them stabbed him on the chest and he fell on the ground immediately. The killers then shot into the air to scare people away before escaping",the anonymous eyewitness is quoted saying.

The eyewitness also added that the murder of the Councillor could be politically motivated as nothing was stolen from him.

Prior to his death, Georgewill represented Ward 2 as a councillor in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area and was a member of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
