President of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is said to have received medical treatment while visiting London. His office has described this as a “precautionary” measure, assuring the nation that his condition is not serious.

The president, who turned 56 on Wednesday, was supposed to attend an investment meeting on Thursday, but he ‘became indisposed’, and as a result he couldn’t attend. He hasn’t had any known serious illness.

Spokesman to the president, Mr. Reuben Abati, said, "President Jonathan has since been examined by competent medical practitioners. He has been advised to rest for a few days…The Presidency wishes to assure all Nigerians that President Jonathan's condition is nothing serious and that the medical attention he has sought is only precautionary."

People present at the Investor’s Council meeting which was held at the Hilton Hotel in London were bothered when it became apparent that the president would be unavailable to make the opening speech at an event which was paid for by the Nigerian government. The event was eventually anchored by Lady Linda Chalker.

SaharaReporters say they received a report that the president’s birthday party, which was held at the InterContinental Hotel, London was ‘heavy’, although it could not be ascertained if the president had had too much to drink at the party.

President Jonathan became president of Nigeria in May 2010 when his predecessor, former president Umaru Yar’Adua died from a long-term heart condition.

Jonathan, who is a Christian from Bayelsa, won an election in 2011, thus continuing his tenure and there are suggestions that he may remain the electoral candidate for PDP, the ruling party, in the 2015 general elections.
