Tomorrow is the long awaited governorship elections. Once more, political parties will get a chance to publicly flex their muscles and puff their chests.
Already, Rivers state in South south Nigeria has been listed as one of the hot spots. The state is very important to Nigeria's two main political parties; All Progressives Congress, APC and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. They're both expected to put up a major fight for it.
I'm no soothsayer but following recent political happenings in the state and Nigeria at large, I am convinced that Nyesom Wike, gubernatorial candidate of PDP will win the Rivers gubernatorial election.
See reasons why Wike will win the Rivers gubernatorial election;
1. Buhari's victory
While the North and parts of the south rejoiced over the victory of Muhammadu Buhari, Rivers state mourned. One could almost touch the sadness in the air everywhere around the state. Buhari's victory turned talkative Rivers people to silent philosophers ''Their brother had just lost the election''. Everybody silently blamed Governor Rotimi Amaechi for stabbing a brother. Nobody blamed the North that cast the majority votes by which the election was determined; it's all Amaechi's fault.
Tomorrow's Governorship election in Rivers state will be about vengeance and Justice for Jonathan. People are itching to give Amaechi a taste of his own medicine. Most voters in Rivers state won't be thinking of along party lines or of how kind hearted and soft spoken Dakuku Peterside of the APC is. They won't even remember the projects he executed in their communities when he served as commissioner of works; they'll only be remembering Buhari's victory.
2. Wike's grassroot movement
Think Ayo Fayose of Ekiti when you you hear Wike. The streets love Wike, the PDP gubernatorial candidate is a strong grassroot politician like none other. Even Governor Amaechi cannot match the crowd Wike pulls whenever he moves. Also Wike's Grassroots Development Initiative, GDI is a very powerful force in grassroot mobilization.
All the Chieftains of the Rivers APC put together cannot mobilize as much grassroot support as Wike. Also, do not forget the over 1million votes the PDP got in the state during the last presidential election.
3. Patience Jonathan
The outgoing first lady is determined not to leave the political scene without one final accomplishment 'Rivers state'. For years, she has had a running battle with Governor Amaechi, tomorrow is one last chance for her to show him who's the boss.
Dame Jonathan is well loved in Rivers state. She is a true Okrika woman, the average Rivers women admires how she always speaks her mind without fear. The first lady is expected to deliver the riverine communities in the state to Wike. Although APC's Dakuku hails from a riverine community, he's no match for the first lady.
