Teng and Zhang, a couple in their early 30s are currently facing multiple charges of women and children trafficking, as reported by the Xinhua news agency on Friday. China’s Ministry of Public Security reports that the man is in custody while the woman has posted bail.
Shanghai police authorities received tips that they put up an ad on QQ (a popular Chinese messaging service) offering their newborn girl for sale, and the police had no trouble tracing the IP address from the ad.
They were arrested in June.
Since their arrest, they have admitted to selling three of their newborns in the past for a total of $13,000. The first baby was sold in 2008, the second in 2011 and the third – which is the girl for which the ad on QQ was put – was sold this year. Authorities have since reclaimed the girl and are now in search of the other two.
The couple say they sold their newborns with hopes that they will find better lives in their new homes, and that the buyers voluntarily gave them money in exchange for the babies. The couple insist that they have never asked for payment.
The sale of babies in China has been a problem for some time now.
