The ECOWAS Parliament on Wednesday in Abuja reiterated its commitment to ensuring the welfare of citizens in West Africa.
Speaking at the end of the Parliament’s Ordinary Session, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu, the Speaker, said the parliament had developed measures to address humanitarian issues and welfare of the region’s citizens to promote integration.
Ekweremadu, who was represented by First Deputy Speaker, Martina Moniz, said the parliament was committed to the process of promoting the integration and welfare of the people.
He stressed the need for all ECOWAS institutions to cooperate to achieve the region’s Vision 2020, and reiterated the commitment of the parliament to tackling insecurity in the region.
He criticised the killing of students in the College of Agriculture in Yobe, and prayed God to grant the affected families the fortitude to bear the loss.
Speaking to newsmen, the fourth deputy speaker, Simon Osei-Mensah, said that with enhancement of the parliament's powers, citizens would be adequately represented in the region.
Osei-Mensah expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far, adding that the parliament ``is the pivot and centre of democracy in the region.”
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Ordinary Session of the Parliament discussed its budget and welfare of members and staff.
It also adopted the work programmes of different joints, standing and ad hoc committees.
