The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday in an issued statement condemned the Coup attempt in South Sudan and the ensuing crisis that has claimed lives and property in the country.

The ministry urged all sides to the conflict to exercise maximum restraint and seek a negotiated settlement to the political crisis.

The statement stressed the need for South Sudan, which is the world’s newest country, to promote good governance, democracy, peace and stability.

It expressed concern about conflicting reports on the security situation in the country.

The statement was, however, silent on the number of Nigerians caught up in the crisis and whether anything was being done to evacuate them back home.

Meanwhile, a statement issued by the U.S. Information Office in Abuja, said President Barack Obama has warned that South Sudan was at the "precipice" of renewed civil war.
