Dr Ade Abolurin, the Commandant General, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) said the organisation had deployed 120,000 personnel to boost security during the 53rd Independence Celebrations nationwide.

The commandant general made this known during a media briefing on Monday in Abuja.

He said the NSCDC would continue to ensure the protection of the lives and properties of Nigerians at all times.

According to him the corps has apprehended 823 suspects between January and September across the country.

He said, of the 823 apprehended, 782 were currently being prosecuted for various crimes.

Abolurin said the corps, in collaboration with relevant agencies of government, had convicted 41 suspects arrested for vandalising critical infrastructures across the country.

He said 230 illegal oil wells were destroyed by the corps, while more than 3,000 drums and 7,000 kegs of stolen petroleum products were intercepted.

The commandant general also said that a 23-year-old man is in the NSCDC custody, for allegedly engaging in cyber crimes.

Briefing newsmen on the arrest, the Assistant Commandant General in-charge of Intelligence and Investigation, Mr Kelechi Madu, said the suspect specialises in hacking into the portals of security and other government agencies in the country.

Madu said the corps had been on the trail of the suspect who was arrested in Osun on Sept. 26, for about a year.

He said an investigation by the corps, showed that the suspect, who was arrested with the assistance of a GSM provider, had, at different times, hacked into the portal of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

According to Madu, the suspect, after hacking into JAMB's portal, allegedly sold question papers of various examinations conducted by the board to candidates ahead of the examinations.

Madu said the suspect also designed Website and advertised for recruitment into different agencies of government.

According to Madu, the suspect has defrauded his victims of large sums of money.

The suspect, who admitted his involvement in the crime, said he charged his victims between N4,500 and N10,000 for application forms and employment respectively.
