Generation of Peace (GOP) an organization promoting peace in Rivers State, has condemned the various ''unnecessary, unprovoked, retrogressive and inhuman attacks, shooting and attempts to murder innocent persons'' who were peacefully travelling to Port Harcourt from Khana, Degema and Abonnema to attend the flag-off of the Presidential Campaigns of their party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday 6 January, 2015.

Speaking on behalf of the group, the Deputy Coordinator and Spokesman, Mr. Amakiri Amakuro, said the attacks have left at least 7 persons seriously injured and hospitalized; he described the dastardly act as shameful and primitive; an act perpetrated by desperate and criminal minded agents of darkness poised for destruction.

Mr. Amakiri Amakuro urged the Police to dispassionately investigate the act, apprehend and prosecute the assailants; he also charged the security agencies, generally, to brace up to forestall insecurity and electoral violence in the state. He stated that every Nigerian has rights and liberty guaranteed under our laws. Freedom of Movement and Freedom of Association, including liberty to belong to a political party of one’s choice, are fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended. These rights are also guaranteed under the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights, the United Nations Charter, the United Nations Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and other international instruments on Human Rights.

Amakuro stated that GOP is urging Rivers people and esteemed residents to remain vigilant, remain peaceful and to desist from inglorious acts, especially, electoral violence and other forms of criminality. Amakuro enjoined Rivers people to always firmly resist coercion, intimidation and threat during the electioneering period.
