A Nigerian man who declared that he didn’t believe in God has been sent to a mental institute in Kano state, a humanist charity group says.

BBC reports that Mubarak Bala, a 29-year old man has been forcibly taken to the mental institute by his relatives in spite of the clean bill of health given him by his doctor.

The International Humanist and Ethical Union say a Lagos-based group has contracted a lawyer to handle his case.

Kano is a (majorly) Muslim state, and Sharia law was adopted in the state in 2000.

The IHEU states that Mr. Bala’s relatives had taken him to see a doctor when he’d told them he didn’t believe in God, as they believed he was mentally ill.

In spite of his doctor’s assurance of his being sound, they went to a second doctor who stated that Bala’s atheism was as a result of a personality change.

The 29-year old chemical engineering graduate was then forcibly taken to the mental institution, but he was able to contact the activists using a smuggled phone.

Spokesman for IHEU, Bob Churchill stated that the group was bothered for his well-being and called for his immediate release.
