The Oyo State House of Assembly has issued a warrant of arrest on the Accountant-General of the state, Mr Oludele Oyadeyi, for refusing to appear before its parliamentary council after being summoned.

Also ordered to be arrested at Tuesday’s plenary of the Assembly were the Permanent Secretary and Director of Inspectorate in the state Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Assembly had at its parliamentary council meeting on Thursday summoned the officers to appear before it on Monday.

The Assembly had summoned the trio in connection with the probe into the usage of the excess crude oil account by the 33 local councils.

The Assembly had demanded information on the amount which accrued to the state and each council as well as how it was expended.

NAN reports that the refusal of the concerned officers to appear before the parliamentary council had infuriated the lawmakers.

Hon Adeniyi Farinto, the member representing Iwajowa State Constituency, moved the motion for the issuance of the warrant of arrest on the erring officers.

He argued that Section 7 of the constitution empowers the Assembly to supervise the local government tier.

Farinto said that the directive given by the Assembly’s council was in accordance with the laws governing the operations of local government, adding that the lawmakers had the powers to issue the warrant of arrest.

Seconding the motion, Hon. Michael Adeshina, representing Ibarapa East State Constituency, described the action of the government officials as a breach of the Assembly's constitutional powers.

Adeshina described the attitude of the government officials as uncalled for, saying the sanctity of the House needed to be protected and the constitutional provision upheld.

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Monsurat Sunmonu, consequently issued the warrant of arrest on the officers and ordered them to be brought before the lawmakers on Thursday while adjourning plenary to Wednesday.
